Roland Joseph "Roly" Demers

Mr. Roland Demers was born in Windsor, Ontario, on October 10, 1922. He is one of the six children of Mr. and Mrs. Ludger Demers. He enlisted in Toronto in January 1942, and one of his two brothers, Marcel, also enlisted in the armed forces.

Mr. Demers was a sapper, and during “the real war”, he was a relay in the 1st Campaign Company of the Royal Canadian Corps of Genius in Sicily and Italy (especially during the Battle of Ortona), in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany where he remained for a year in the occupation force. At the end of the war, he was an alternate corporal. He returned home without being injured. He had “just passed close,” he says.

He owned a television and appliance store (Demers & Mohr TV & Appliances) until he retired “to play golf”.

Mr. Demers and his wife Annie had six children, 13 grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
